Dear supporters, following the lead from our brave volunteers who did our charity skydive last year, L.I.P.S has now found their next fundraising challenge for 2016 - and we want to know if you are tough enough to join us?!?!?
This year in September, some more of our brave volunteers will be putting on their walking boots and tackling "The 3 Peaks Challenge" (Los Tres Picos). Did you know that Spain is home to the second highest mountain range in Europe - namely the Sierra Nevada - and that the highest mountain in Continental Spain, Mulhacen, is located there?? The 3 Peaks Challenge includes scaling Mulhacen's dizzying 3,482 metres ascent! But we thought, why conquer one mountain when you can conquer three?! The other 2 mountains included in the challenge are Veleta at 3,394 metres and Alcazaba at 3,371 metres.
The challenge is certainly not for the faint-hearted and it is designed to push you completely out of your comfort zone, making it an astonishing accomplishment for anyone who completes it. The walks will be fully guided and there are frequent breaks to catch your breath and to take in the spectacular vistas of the Sierra Nevada. The challenge is spread over 3 days, climbing one peak per day. There are also several options when it comes to accommodation.
We are planning to complete the challenge during the week beginning Monday 19th September. Please note that the challenge itself lasts for 3 days, climbing 1 peak per day, and participants will need a day either side of the challenge for travelling (and recovering, and of course, celebrating!!).
The following is a quote based on a group of 10 participants, which will require 2 guides. The quote also includes accomodation at the Hotel Espana in Lanjaron for the 2 non-challenge days (based on twin room), which can be arranged for us through the company running the challenge.
Cost per person for 10 persons:
Guiding 3 days @ €40 a day €120
Refugio Poqueira 2 nights @ €17 €34
Bus to Hoya del Portillo €10
€25 per night sharing (twin beds) in Hotel Espana, Lanjaron
It is also essential to have Basic Mountain Rescue and Repatriation Insurance for this kind of adventure! The company have recommended using The Austrian Alpine Club in the UK, which gives cover for 12 months. Members can also benefit from a good discount on the refugio costs. The cost of cover for the insurance depends on age, information about a years membership can be found on the following link: http://aacuk.org.uk/p-membership-2016
Finally, it may be that we may need to hire some form of transport in order to make our way to the Sierra Nevada as a team! This is a cost that will be determined after we have definite numbers for the challenge.
